Advent Calendars are one of my favorite things about Christmas. What kid doesn’t love a treat every day while they count down to Christmas Day? I came up with my own advent calendar with ornaments that can be used year after year and customized each time!
- 25 small gift boxes
- Scrapbook Paper
- Glue Sticks
- Any other Scrapbooking supplies you have on hand
I found natural brown kraft boxes from Xpedex (they also come in white if that fits your decor better). Each one is 2″X2″X2″ square. Check the wedding favor department of a party supply store if you don’t have an Xpedex store by you.
As you can see, you can easily fit 6 Kisses in one box, perfect for my family of 6! Once you have your boxes, start decorating each one. I found scrapbook paper that matched my Christmas colors and some were “Christmas” papers but most were not. I tried to do each one a little different. Then I went through my beads, vintage costume jewelry (left over from my Jewelry Tree), and miscellaneous crafting supplies. I came across a souvenir bag from Limoges, France where I bought a small bag of figures made from their famous china. The figures kind of look like the wise men, fish, baby Jesus? Well, that’s what I’m calling them. I poked a hole through the top of some and the sides of others to attach the ribbon loop to each box. A clip on Vintage Santa earring and a locket that I cut out a painting of baby and adult Jesus (from a church magazine) are a few of my favorites.
Which ones do you like?
It takes a while to create 25 different ornament boxes, but my children LOVE our boxes.
We go to the market and pick up a variety of candies and load each box with 6 treats (this is where you can customize your calendar, use chocolates, caramels, Starbursts, money or mini toys)!
I put the boxes in a giant glass vase.
We rotate a different child picking thier favorite box each day, we save the box with the baby Jesus photo for Christmas day. Then, after we open and eat our treat, that child hangs the box on our Christmas tree. You could also hang them from garland, have a special little tree just for the advent ornaments or stack them in their own little tree on a pedestal.
The count down to Christmas begins!
