6 Comments DIY Denim Tie
My oldest son Jake is very stylish. Today I am sharing his very own creation, a DIY Denim Tie. This year he is in 7th grade and accidentally got put in Home Economics. It actually suited him quiet well, and the girls in his class quite liked having him around. He started off with a skinny tie that he already had.
Then he took an old pair of his dad’s jeans and laid them out on the counter. He looked around till he found the worn marks and whiskering that he wanted on the front of the tie.
He turned them inside out and placed the tie over the desired parts of the jeans.
Then with a marker he traced the tie with about a 1/4 of an inch extra all the way around. The jeans were not long enough for the tie, so he traced the extra needed right next to the main part of the tie.
Then he cut them out and pinned the two sections together.
After a bit of debate about thread color, he opted for the blue closest to the denim itself. Then he stitched a simple stitch 1/4 inch in from the edges. This way it wouldn’t fray too much after being washed.
If you look close you can see the stitch marks in the photo below.
Pair the tie with a funky plaid shirt and there you have it. I love that he came up with the idea and executed it all on his own!
That is one stylish Jr. High kid! Thanks for letting me take pics along the way Jake.

Awesome job! Home Ec. Is really a great class for boys as well as girls. We all need to know the basics! FYI my 15 yr. old granddaughter is taking Auto Mechanics- her reason so when I get a car I can fix it myself! I’m soooo proud of her!
I love this tie what. Nice job Jake!
I am dying to know what you are doing this year for new beginnings.
When will you be sharing?
Camille, we are having a planning meeting tonight. I’ll let you know when I know
WOW!
I really LOVE that! That is quite possibly a tie I could get my husband to wear.
GREAT job! He should be super proud of himself! x
That’s wonderful! I think my son would wear a tie like that, I may have to shamelessly copy your son! Home Econ is a great class for everyone, and it appears that your son got a good teacher that didn’t restrict him too much in what he could create. I hope there’s even more coolness from that class in the future
LOVE THIS!! -Have recently come across an old pair of jeans and this will be perfect to make for my college aged kiddos -
